This Is What Happens When Deus And BMW Team Up On An EV Motorcycle Build
Deus Lodge and BMW Motorrad have teamed up to create a custom CE 02 that’s all about the laid back beach life.
Deus Ex Machina has always been more of a vibe than a full-on corporate brand. Since its early days in Australia, it’s been the go-to name for anyone who loves two wheels, surfboards, coffee, and good design. Over the years, Deus has shaped moto culture in a way few others have, by mixing custom bikes, art, and beach life into something that feels effortlessly cool.
But even icons have to evolve. The world’s moving toward electric everything, and motorcycles are no exception. Whether you love or hate the idea, electrification is reshaping how people get around. Bikes are getting smaller, quieter, and more accessible. They’re becoming less about brute power and more about personality and practicality. And that’s exactly where BMW’s CE 02 fits in.
The CE 02 is BMW Motorrad’s answer to the question, “What would happen if we reinvented the small motorcycle for the TikTok and Instagram generation?” It’s small, playful, and designed for urban life. BMW calls it an “eParkourer,” which sounds weird and even a bit cringey. But wait until you ride one yourself, and you’ll see that this is actually a fitting nickname. It’s not really a scooter and not quite a full-on motorcycle either. You could say that it just exists in its own category.
You can get the CE 02 in two versions: an 11-kilowatt (15-horsepower) model that tops out around 60 miles an hour, and a 4-kilowatt (5-horsepower) version that’s even easier to ride and perfect for first-timers. Both have two standard ride modes called Flow and Surf, plus an optional Flash mode if you want a bit more punch. There’s a 3.5-inch display, front-wheel ABS, reverse assist, and a USB-C port to charge your phone. Basically, it’s the kind of bike you can ride every day without overthinking it.
Perhaps it’s that simplicity and future-forward approach that caught the attention of Deus Lodge, Deus Ex Machina’s UK outpost near Boscombe Beach. Since opening in 2023, the Lodge has become a creative hangout for surfers, riders, and locals who live by the sea. So when Deus teamed up with BMW Motorrad UK, the goal was simple: build something that fits the Lodge lifestyle.
The result is a custom CE 02 dressed in Deus Lodge colors of olive green, orange, and a bit of black. The build is accentuated with details that make it feel more like a beach cruiser than a city commuter. It’s meant to be used as a runaround for staff and friends, whether for coffee runs or errands by the shore. It’s practical, fun, and totally in line with the Deus philosophy of not taking things too seriously.
Deus Lodge co-founder Ross Morton summed it up best: they wanted a bike that made sense “for all seasons by the sea.” Something light, versatile, and dripping with personality. The CE 02 turned out to be exactly that.
What makes this collaboration interesting isn’t just the look, but rather, what it represents. Deus built its reputation on gasoline, noise, and nostalgia, but here it is embracing an electric bike without losing its soul. That’s a pretty strong statement. Of course, Deus is by no means saying goodbye to good old fashioned internal combustion, but nevertheless, this is a big sign of where things are going.
