If you're accustomed to wearing a full-face helmet, the transition to a ¾ coverage or half helmet can feel very different—and that’s with a run-of-the-mill half helmet. The new Nexx SWITX SX 10 helmet takes that transition to a new level because it's something totally different.
The SX 10 is different from other helmets in its class in a range of ways, not least which is its unique appearance, which has a lot of options for customization.
The outer helmet cover, which doubles as the shutter for the ventilation system is removable and can be changed out for any of the 27 color options. Thus, without so much as a drop of paint, the color scheme of the SX 10 can be changed. Similarly, there are a total of five color options for the external Lexan polycarbonate face shield and a total of four color options for the internal sun visor—another feature not common on half helmet designs.
One of the key advantages of a half helmet design is very light weight. The SX 10 has that quality weighing in at only 1200g (2.6 lb.). Being physically smaller than full-face helmets is another advantage in terms of stow and go capability. The SX 10 is designed to be able to fit in most motorcycle saddle bags, top boxes or tank bags. Nexx product literature states the SX 10 is the smallest half jet helmet with a double visor on the market.
Another advantage of the SX 10 design is ventilation within the ATR/polycarbonate shell. The operation of the ventilation control system results in a clever dual-use of the removable external cover. It pivots forward to close the wide (2 3/8” x 3/8”) twin vents at the brow of the helmet and the triple exhaust vents at the back and pivots back to open all of them simultaneously. The internal sun visor is notched to keep it from blocking the vents when down, and it retracts back completely past the vents when raised so air can flow with the sun visor in either position.
The outer shell is removable to allow customization and doubles as the shutter for the twin front air intakes and triple rear exhaust ports for ventilation control.
The comfort liner is a plush synthetic fabric that is hypoallergenic but non-removable. The retention system utilizes a padded nylon strap and quick-release Micro-metric buckle. The buckle ratchets to the setting you want with audible clicks at each increment by sliding the grooved tab into the buckle. The buckle releases instantly by pulling on the red nylon strap tab on the buckle. The system is easy to use with gloves on compared to the old style double D ring system.
The SWITX SX 10 has ECE/22-05, DOT FMVSS 218 and NBR-7471:2001 certifications. The labeling on the back of the helmet indicates both the DOT and ECE certifications.
Face protection from the standard clear Lexan face shield is good and the shield doesn't tend to lift even at Interstate speeds. It has four positions including fully up and fully down and tends to stay in whichever position you place it. The face shield has openings that align with the helmet’s brow vents when it's fully down, but in any of the partially raised positions, the alignment and most of the airflow into the vents is lost.
The slot in the middle of the helmet holds the button that slides forward and back to raise and lower the integral sun visor.
Only two situations in use come up that relate to the face shield functions—when turning your head to the right or left. It's approximately the angle you would turn if you were to face your rear view mirrors; a jet of wind blows up under the shield into the eye on the side you turn toward. Facing straight ahead, no problem. And, when you turn your head about 90 degrees to look straight out to the side, in either direction a notable wind whistle occurs.
One other minor note: When the weather got cool, the face shield did exhibit minor fogging at the bottom edge when at a stop, but it never got near the view area and was not a problem at all when in motion. All minor problems, but worth mentioning.
The retractable sun visor is an 80 percent smoke tint that is raised and lowered with a small button that slides in a slot down the middle of the helmet. To meet helmet surface protrusion limitations in the applicable safety standards (maximum 0.20 inch or 5 mm), the button doesn't protrude very much above the helmet surface. Occasionally, I found my gloved hand moving the outer helmet cover instead of or along with the sun visor control button, which opened or closed the vent openings when I only wanted to raise or lower the sun visor. That resolved with more time in use.
Initially, getting the helmet in the best position for use of the retractable sun visor takes a little experimentation—I found that I’d either have the helmet a little too far back on my head leaving the sun visor too high when fully dropped down or so low the bottom edge could contact my nose and face. With familiarity in use, that came more naturally, as well.
A full-coverage face shield and tinted retractable sun visor make the Nexx SX 10 helmet capable for a variety of riding conditions with excellent eye protection.
Helmet sizing appears to run true to the norms; the SX 10 in a men’s large (60 cm EU) fits very well—just snug enough to prevent any shifting while in use, whether the main face shield was up or down but not so tight as to be uncomfortable.
The substantial difference in weight between the SX 10 and some of the full-face helmets I’m accustomed to wearing is perhaps the most noticeable feature. Extended rides, particularly when the weather turned hot and muggy were really comfortable and the helmet fatigue factor was notably diminished.
The SX 10 is an innovative departure from the standard helmets of the past. If you favor the light weight, open ventilation of the half helmet design, and lots of options for customization of your head gear, the Nexx SX 10 may be what you’re looking for.
