This New Isle of Man Spectator Safety Video Is Totally Road Racing Meets Airplane Safety

The Isle of Man TT is undoubtedly one of the coolest races on the planet, but if you're attending in person, keep your wits about you.

If you've ever seen any footage from the Isle of Man TT, you already have some idea of what an amazing event it is. Like any motorsport event, it's different (and more exciting) to see in person than through a screen; sometimes, maybe to the point where it's overwhelming. We motorsports fans tend to get emotional when we're finally able to attend That Race that we've been seeing for so long on TV, you know?

Still, while the excitement of sharing a space with untold numbers of like-minded people at a motorsport event is, quite rightly, a bit overwhelming, it's important to make sure everyone knows the ground rules to stay safe. That's why the IOMTT organizers have put together this spectator safety video ahead of the 2026 TT.

I don't know how much air travel you do, but for me, a funny thing about this video is how it's essentially structured like any given airline safety video you've seen in recent years. What do I mean by this? It takes a serious subject (TT spectator safety), and presents it in a quirky, funny, scripted manner that's meant to be memorable.

After all, what are you going to remember: Some rando reading a list of rules and regulations to you in a dry, dull monotone, or actors doing silly things on location on the Mountain Course? There's a reason that really hilarious memes stick around in our collective minds rent-free, and it's usually because they've stood out to us by being funny in the first place.

Some of the rules covered here might seem obvious to some of us, but others might be event-specific details you might not know if you weren't told. For example, you might reasonably assume that you shouldn't enter closed roads during the event; that one seems obvious, right? But how do you know when a road (because yes, these are public roads the rest of the time, when there's not an officially-sanctioned racing event going on) is open again?

There's a Roads Open car that goes by, with official markings and flashing red lights to let spectators know that the road is being opened again. It's definitely an important detail to keep in mind if you're visiting and you aren't local to the event.

Additionally, while anyone who's attended any kind of motorsport event (and is the observant type) probably recognizes safety marshals, what you may not know is that the IOMTT's marshals have legal powers that must be obeyed. If they tell you to do something, you need to listen and do it.

Other things are a bit more obvious, like reading and obeying signs about restricted viewing areas, and sticking to places where it's considered safe to set up your chair or your picnic blanket and take in the race from there.

What do you think?

Although you'd hope that no one needs to be reminded to pack any garbage or other items you bring in out with you when you go, that's also an important point to raise. Likewise, drone safety (don't bring 'em, the TT folks have helicopters to capture the best possible footage) and selfie stick safety (just don't) might seem like no-brainers, but sometimes these things just need to be stated again to make sure they get through to people.

If you're one of the lucky fans attending the TT, we hope you have an amazing (and safe) time!
