This Is the Most Chaotic Motorcycle Police Chase We've Ever Seen

This probably isn't the best time to "phone a friend."

I've seen quite a few police chases in my time. It was big business in Los Angeles' newsrooms and has been since the '70s when the local news figured out they were absolutely captivating to the public. I've even seen them firsthand, with one chase coming so close to me, I nearly got hit by the running car. I seriously thought I had accidentally walked onto a movie set, given so many films and TV shows were filmed right where I lived.

But in all my time watching these chases go down, seeing them live, and covering them for multiple news outlets, this latest involving a dirt biker has to be one of the most chaotic of them all.

Not only do the cops lose the suspect for a little while, and not only is the dirt bike clearly just a dirt bike—no headlight, taillights, turn signals, etc—but it's straight through Los Angeles, goes on forever, the suspect stops multiple times, even getting gas twice, and phones not just what appears to be a friend ala Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, but also the local news station itself.

What a scene.

According to KTLA, "A man on a dirt bike was arrested after leading officers on an erratic, high-speed chase through Los Angeles County Wednesday night. The male suspect was wanted on suspicion of wielding a firearm while riding in public, the Los Angeles Police Department said."

For those wondering where this all started, apparently, in downtown Los Angeles, right near Dodger Stadium. Right by my old hood, and where I nearly got hit during a chase, too. Choppers apparently were quick to the scene—the PD is right freakin' there, man—and followed him as he made his way trying to evade capture. And not just once, but twice, does the suspect stop for gas. Once at an actual gas station, where he subsequently ripped off the gas nozzle fleeing, and another time after he apparently phoned a friend to drop off a gallon of gas in some random park, only for the police to surround him before he could fill up.

What do you think?

He then called into ABC7 Los Angeles and started chatting with one of the outlet's photographers.

The chase, however, ended after the dirt bike ran out of gas, requiring the suspect to ditch it and flee on foot. After a short search, the cops found him hiding in a trash can. According to KTLA, "He was taken into custody without further incident." But if you haven't watched the full nearly 40-minute chase, grab some popcorn, go to the bathroom, and get ready for what has to be one of the wildest chases you'll ever see.
