Can-Am's Defender UTV Just Got Even More Utilitarian, And For Good Reason

It's got racks, rulers, tool holders, and everything you need for a hard day's work.

It's easy to forget that UTVs and ATVs started as simple utility machines. Somewhere along the way, they picked up more power, more suspension travel, and a lot more attention, but for a huge number of owners, they still spend most of their time doing very unglamorous work. And that's really where they prove their worth.

Can-Am seems keen on remembering that for 2027. And it's making the Defender and Outlander Pro more useful for farmers, ranchers, land managers, and anyone else who treats these things less like weekend toys and more like actual equipment.

The big addition is the new Defender XU, a utility-focused configuration available across nearly the entire Defender lineup, from base models through the Lone Star and both open and enclosed cab versions. The mud-focused X MR is the lone exception, which makes sense. Asking a dedicated mud machine to cosplay as farm equipment would be getting greedy. Pricing for the second generation Defender XU starts at $19,799.

More importantly, the XU isn't some graphics package with rugged stickers and an optimistic name. It gets a factory-installed rack with LinQ mounting points and steel tie-downs, plus a Low Bed Wall Extender that adds 16 inches of vertical height to the cargo box. Can-Am even put rulers on the upper ends of the extender, so you know just how utility focused this thing is.

Plus, integrated LinQ Tool Holders provide somewhere to secure shovels, rakes, and other long-handled equipment, while an optional multi-position cargo rack can create a second storage level above the bed. There's also a trailer hitch ball mount that takes advantage of the Defender's 2,500-pound towing capacity, opening the door to utility trailers, sprayers, spreaders, and whatever else needs dragging around the property.

What do you think?

Can-Am's utility push extends to its ATVs. Starting at $7,749, the 2027 Outlander Pro retains its firmer work-oriented suspension, thicker-ply tires, front and rear bumpers, A-arm protection, utility-calibrated CVT, and speed limiter through Intelligent Throttle Control. For 2027, every Outlander Pro also gets handguards, fender flares, footwell protectors, and a trailer hitch mount.

None of these updates are particularly glamorous, and that's exactly why they make sense. The powersports industry has spent years proving just how fast and elaborate UTVs and ATVs can become. Can-Am is instead making a couple of its workhorses better at being workhorses.
