BUM Just Made a Working LEGO Go-Kart or Maybe This Qualifies as a LEGO Car
The lads over at BUM made an electric LEGO go-kart, but I'd argue it's more car than kart. Watch the video to see if it can survive a time trial.
Is building a working LEGO go-kart every child's dream? Maybe. Is it every manchild's dream? Yes. I'd have thought that was the ultimate LEGO build, until I watched BUM's video and realized that building a LEGO car is actually the ultimate dream. But even after watching the video, I'm still not sure how feasible it is.
The lads at BUM gave the project a shot but used the bones of an old electric go-kart build as the foundation for this "Bugatti LEGO car". Of course, you can't just put LEGO blocks on a tubular chassis and expect them to stay put. This is a good time to mention that the folks at BUM are using giant LEGO bricks rather than regular-sized blocks.
To lay the foundations, the lads secure wood on top of the frame, to which they then drill LEGO blocks. But after that, it's LEGO building as usual. Based on the video's title, I was expecting a go-kart, but it quickly becomes apparent this will be much closer to a car than a kart. This thing has a hood, trunk, spoiler, and a roof, so I ask you: can you still call it a go-kart at that stage?
By the time the build is finished, it looks like the car from The Incredibles. But would all that work wind up making an incredible LEGO car? Short answer: no. I mean, it looks really cool, and it rips, but there's way too much flex in the LEGO blocks under even mild acceleration. But the lads still managed to make an entertaining challenge with the kart.
The pair did a time trial using a pretty basic slalom made up of cones. The catch is, if you lose any blocks along the way, your time takes a hit. Check out the video to see if the lads were able to keep the build in one piece.
