Heads Up, Piaggio Is Recalling All Of Its 2026 Liberty Scooters Over A Faulty Headlight
This recall is for the US market only, so if you own a Piaggio Liberty in other markets, you should check with your local recall authority.
Do you own a shiny, new 2026 Piaggio Liberty 50 or 150 scooter and live in the US? If this describes you, then you should know that Piaggio Group Americas just issued a safety recall for every last one of the 2026 Libertys that have been sold so far in our market. The issue relates to a faulty capacitor inside the headlight unit on both the 50cc and 150cc versions of the Liberty, which could affect proper operation of both the headlight and even the instrument panel lighting.
If the headlight and/or instrument panel lighting on the scooter is not working properly, especially at night, this could reduce a rider's visibility on the road, and could also increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the instrument panel is affected, this could affect a rider's ability to operate their scooter safely, on top of the headlight not working properly.
Approximately 112 scooters are involved in this recall according to Piaggio Group America's records. This includes a total of 76 of the 2026 Piaggio Liberty 150s produced between January 1, 2026 and February 2, 2026, as well as 36 of the 2026 Piaggio Liberty 50s produced between January 1, 2026 and February 2, 2026.
Piaggio Group Americas issued this safety recall on June 24, 2026. The company plans to notify registered owners about this recall between June 29, 2026 and July 15, 2026. All headlamp units produced and installed after the affected date range have properly working capacitors installed, and so are not affected by this recall.
Owners of the affected scooters will be instructed to contact their local authorized Piaggio/Vespa dealer to schedule a recall service, which will be provided at no charge to the customer. The service will involve an inspection of the headlight unit in your scooter to see if it was produced within the applicable date range. If it was, it will be replaced with an entirely new headlight unit that has a properly functioning capacitor. The expected service time for this recall service is 30 minutes.
Owners may contact Piaggio Group America's customer service hotline at (212) 380-4400, or email them at customercare@us.piaggio.com. Additionally, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171) or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
