Vespa’s 80th Anniversary Party Might Be The Most Italian Thing Ever

Vespa’s 80th anniversary celebration in Rome could become the biggest scooter gathering the world has ever seen.

There are motorcycle events, there are scooter rallies, and then there’s whatever the hell Vespa is about to unleash on Rome next year. Because while most brands celebrate anniversaries with a special paint job and maybe a limited-edition keychain, Vespa looked at its 80th birthday and decided to throw what could become the largest scooter gathering in human history.

And the wild part is that it’ll probably work.

You see, I got a small taste of this insanity a couple months ago at the launch of the new Vespa 180 scooters during one of the big motorcycle expos here in Manila. The turnout was massive, the energy was borderline cult-like, and there were people talking about Vespas the same way Ducati fans talk about Desmosedicis or Porsche guys talk about air-cooled 911s. Some Vespisti don’t simply ride Vespas. They devote themselves to them. There’s heritage, ritual, fashion, nostalgia, and social identity all tangled together into one compact metal-bodied scooter.

So when Piaggio announced “Vespa Roma 2026 – 80 Years Of An Icon,” my first thought wasn’t “oh cool, an anniversary event.” My first thought was: Rome is about to become completely overrun by scooters. Even more so than it already is.

From June 25 to 28, the Italian capital will host four days of concerts, exhibits, gymkhana competitions, treasure hunts, parades, and vintage showcases centered around the Vespa. Tens of thousands of riders from 48 countries are expected to attend. The main venue will be the Stadio dei Marmi at Foro Italico, transformed into a giant “Vespa Village” packed with historical displays, current models, merch, lifestyle collections, and enough Italian branding to make your espresso taste more expensive.

And this is where things get interesting. Vespa stopped being “just a scooter company” a long time ago. This event reads less like EICMA and more like Milan Fashion Week. One of the official partners is Molteni&C, a luxury furniture brand. Another is New Era. There’s also a coffee company, a digital bank, luxury department stores, and premium mineral water brands involved. That tells you exactly where Vespa sees itself in the global pecking order. It's not selling you scooters. It's selling you a lifestyle.

The centerpiece of the event will probably be the Grand Parade on June 27, where thousands of Vespas from every generation will swarm through Rome’s historic streets. Imagine vintage smallframes buzzing past the Colosseum while modern GTS models roll beside them like some giant moving Pinterest board for Italian culture. It’s either the greatest scooter event ever conceived or complete sensory overload. Possibly both.

There’s also going to be a Concorso di Eleganza showcasing rare historical models, along with gymkhana championships and Vespa Club competitions. Which, by the way, is another thing outsiders don’t fully understand. Vespa people are competitive. Extremely competitive. They’ll argue about restoration accuracy, original paint codes, and period-correct accessories with the intensity of MotoGP engineers debating winglets.

What do you think?

And somewhere in the middle of all this chaos, there’ll probably be an 80th anniversary special edition scooter lurking in the background because there’s no way Piaggio skips that opportunity.

But even without a commemorative model, this event matters. Very few two-wheeled brands become cultural institutions. Harley-Davidson did it with its HOG rally. Ducati is doing it through racing. And Vespa transcended the scooter category decades ago. At this point, it’s basically an Italian religion with mirrors, chrome racks, and matching helmets.
