Please Tell Absolutely Everyone About This Water Bottle Recall, It's Important

In a time when almost everyone carries a water bottle on the daily, this one's scary.

Listen, I know a water bottle recall is a bit outside the norm for RideApart. However, it's a pretty big recall, and since I'm pretty sure just about everyone in the powersports world enjoys keeping ourselves hydrated, it feels like the responsible thing to do to mention this recall here. It feels like a thing that as many people as possible need to know about.

Massive everything-retailer Walmart is recalling its 64-ounce Ozark Trail stainless steel insulated water bottle because, to quote the recall, "the lid can forcefully eject, posing serious impact and laceration hazards." This recall was published by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on July 10, 2025. Walmart has been selling this bottle since 2017, and believes that around 850,000 of these bottles have been sold.

That's almost a million of these things sitting around out there, potentially waiting to give someone a really, really bad day.

Now, it won't necessarily happen to everyone, but you definitely don't want it to happen to you. According to the recall, if food, carbonated beverages, or certain perishables like juice or milk are stored inside for a period of time and start to ferment, the gas can turn the cap into a projectile.

So far, Walmart has received three separate reports of consumers "who were injured when struck in the face by a lid forcefully ejected from these bottles upon opening." The recall notice goes on to say that "two consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye."

Now, here's where it gets a little tricky. According to the recall, the packaging for the affected water bottles, which retailed for around US $15, contains the model number 83-662. However, once you remove the packaging, like pretty much everyone will do before they use their water bottles, the model number is not marked anywhere on or inside the bottle.

Walmart is advising everyone who has one of these bottles to immediately stop using it. If you have one of these water bottles, you can return it to your nearest Walmart store for a refund. Concerned customers can also call Walmart customer service via its toll-free number at 800-925-6278 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Central.

The affected bottles are silver stainless steel units with a black plastic cap that screws into place. They have an Ozark Trail logo on the side of the bottle, and measure 4.41 by 4.41 by 11.5 inches. These bottles have been sold at Walmart stores throughout the US since 2017.
