There's a dual-sport helmet on offer, too.
We’re heavily into new bike season, but it’s also new gear season! Whether you’re already actively shopping for new gear, or just like to look around and see what’s out, there’s plenty of stuff to catch your attention. If you’re looking for a motocross lid, the 2021 Fly Racing lineup has three dedicated options to choose from—and one that goes from street to dirt with equal ease. Let’s take a look.
For 2021, Fly Racing’s top-of-the-line MX helmet is the Formula. It features a 12K carbon fiber shell for lightweight, robust protection. Other protective features include impact energy cells made of Fly’s proprietary RHEON material, as well as Conehead EPS and strategically-placed areas of expanded volume EPS. There’s also a soft zone specifically geared toward clavicle impacts, to help mitigate your risk of bad collarbone injuries.
This lid flows plenty of air, features a comfort liner and quick-release cheek pads that are removable, washable, moisture-wicking, and anti-microbial. It’s ECE and DOT certified, comes in multiple colorways and sizes, and MSRP is $649.95.
Fly Racing’s mid-grade MX option is the Formula CC, which features all the same internal safety features as the Formula. The cost savings here is in the shell, which is a tri-weave composite made of carbon fiber, Kevlar, and fiberglass. It’s still lightweight, still protective, and still ECE and DOT-certified, but hits that middle-grade price point at an MSRP of $449.95.
The 2021 entry-level MX helmet option from Fly Racing is the Kinetic. It’s DOT-approved, makes use of a polymer shell, and has dual-density EPS inside. Three different shell sizes cradle four different EPS sizes to cover head sizes from XS to 2XL. Both the liner and cheek pads are removable and washable, though Fox doesn’t say anything about their moisture-wicking or anti-microbial properties, so that's possibly another area changed to bring down costs. Multiple colorways are available, and the MSRP is $109.95.
For those looking for a lid that can do double duty, both on and off-road, the Fly Racing Trekker is intended to meet those needs. It’s ECE and DOT approved, and features a polymer shell, dual density EPS, two shell sizes, and a clear face shield with anti-fog coating and UVA/B protection up to 400 nanometers.
Additionally, the visor and the shield are designed to work together, so that if you raise the shield, it stays completely out of sight and tucked away. When the shield is closed, it can also accommodate goggles and goggle straps. The moisture-wicking Qwik-Dry liner and cheek pads are removable and washable, and there’s a bunch of ventilation to keep you cool. Tinted and mirror shields are optional. It comes in several colors, and MSRP for this dual-duty lid is $149.95.
