There is still time, even if you don't yet own a bike, to enter and race in next week's Hell on Wheels Halloween Hill Climb event at Glen Helen.

There's still time—even if you don't yet own a bike—to enter and race in next week's Hell on Wheels Halloween Hill Climb event at Glen Helen Raceway. Because of the time trial nature of the event, (riders are flagged off one at a time to do an abbreviated motocross course, then take a run up the hill) you can have any number of people sharing the same bike. Just don't be that guy that breaks it so your friends don't get their chance.

Come Dressed For the Festivities

Besides shopping for a bike (if you don't already own something wearing knobbies) you're going to want to pick up some sort of costume...because those are also required.

My friend Charlie just went down to the nearest pumpkin patch and bought a huge pumpkin, then inserted his least favorite helmet inside of it. Making him look a lot like Charlie Brown in "You're a Good Sport Charlie Brown"

I also dug deep into my childhood memories and went as Mayor McCheese (I already had the cheeseburger helmet.)

Try as I might though, I could not make it up the hill on my poor, beat-up Husqvarna. This year should be different; the bike has a fresh top end and a lot more power.

Yes, there will be plenty of beer and festivities, with a band likely playing and pin-up girls doing the flagging.

And don't worry about all this debauchery happening on a Sunday. If it's anything like last year, Jesus will be there too to help balance things out.

Who's Welcome? Anyone In Search Of Dirt

They will let pretty much anyone in on any bike race—whether you have something dirt appropriate or not. I've seen guys ride big Harley cruisers in, then proceed to get them bent and dirty trying to get up the hill.

As usual the organization online is not the best, but if you click the picture on this landing page, and pay the $40, you can email or hand in your entry form at the event. Or just bring cash and enter the day of for $50.

Here's a good video that captures the tone and attitude of the event perfectly. It also features a team of mostly naked sailors who all shared a beat up XL250 last year.
