Want to Learn to Ride In New York State? Now You Can Again

If you've heard about NY motorcycle training issues, they're fixed now.

If you're in the US, and you're even slightly interested in motorcycles, then you've probably heard of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. It's a national organization that exists to spread the message (and training techniques) to get would-be riders familiar with their bikes, so they can ride safely and have fun.

Many states throughout the US have training programs, either through the state's Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Transportation, or similar state org to teach motorcycle safety fundamentals to new and existing riders alike. In recent time, riders in New York had been facing difficulties in finding training. When Road and Track tried to investigate the issue, the main complaint they found seemed to be that everyone including MSF instructors felt as though they'd been left in the dark and weren't being told anything about the situation by those running the program. For what it's worth, you can find similar complaints among New York-based riders in Reddit threads, as well.

On April 29, 2025, that all changed, as the MSF formally announced that it had signed a brand-new, five-year contract with the New York DMV to offer its motorcycle training curriculum from now through 2030. The agreement went to effect on April 25, and updated contracts were sent to all previously authorized motorcycle training facilities throughout the state, later that same day.

The New York State Motorcycle Safety Program maintains a website where interested future riders can learn more about course offerings, including what to expect, how to sign up, and locations of courses. If you're interested in a Basic RiderCourse for either two- or three-wheeled motorbikes, and you don't live in New York, you can find out more about the MSF's programs on the national website. This site also links to state websites that can direct you to local training facilities in your area where you can sign up.
