Segway's First EV Dirt Bike Is Cheap As Hell, And Your Kid Is Going to Want It

Segway's new Xaber 300 all-electric dirt bike just released to the public, and it comes with one of the best price points for the industry.

Last week, I was in rural Wisconsin testing Can-Am's new all-electric Outlander ATV, and as you'd expect, the topic of EVs in the outdoors arose. How could it not? But more so, we talked about how the youths of today have been far more enthusiastic adopters of the technology, with EV dirt bikes being the easiest metric to point toward.

Yet, while there's still a number of old guard decrying the switch between gas to electric—"these young whipper snappers need to learn how to adjust a carb, by gammit!"—the growing chorus among the industry as a whole is one moving toward an EV-only future.

Zero switched its focus to EV dirt bikes. Stark Future went all in and became an actually profitable startup in record time. The likes of Sur-Ron, Niu, and Talaria are exploding, and not just the batteries anymore. And now, a new kid is entering the market, one with a decidedly more diverse history. Yes, I'm talking about Segway's new Xaber 300.

But while we've talked about the new dirt bike in recent posts, as well as its specs, what we haven't known is the price tag. Well, folks, that just dropped, and it's stupidly reasonable for today's economy.

According to the company, the Segway Xaber 300 will come with an asking price of just $5,299.99, and that's extremely reasonable given the performance and aptitude it delivers. Now, Segway is proposing this takes the place of your 150-250cc gasoline dirt bikes, as it weighs just 187 pounds, and pretty solid shocks, wheels, and tires.

Four piston brakes handle stopping on both wheels, while inverted Marzocchi shocks up front, and a Marzocchi multi-link setup is at the back. There are 220 millimeters of travel both front and rear, too, and both are fully adjustable for compression, rebound, and preload. Like I said, pretty damn solid specs.

As for propulsion, that's handled by a 72V, 44Ah high-performance battery with Samsung-sourced cells that are, according to the company, the same as those found in automotive battery packs. That's good for up to 62 miles on a single charge, so long as you have it in 150 mode. What's that, you ask? I'm glad you did.

Segway's 2.4-inch full-color TFT infotainment screen offers riders a host of functionalities, including five different modes: 150, 200, 300, Beast, and Pro.  Beast gives you maximum performance, while Pro lets you change the power curve to however you'd like. There's also traction control, Hill Hold Control, regen settings, a wheelie coach, and parental controls such as geo-fencing, speed limiting, and more. It's also OTA capable, so if there's an update to anything, you'll be able to just connect to Wifi and be done.

What do you think?

"With Xaber 300, we set out to create an e-dirt bike that punches well above its price tag in terms of uncompromising off-road performance," said Nick Howe, head of Segway's e-bike division, adding,  "As the world leader in light electric vehicles, we had the technology, engineering and manufacturing experience and capability to do just that. This is a really special machine that raises the bar in its category."

The Xaber 300 is now available to order or pick up at your local dealership, but again, I want to pay special attention to the price, as this is a bike that's meant to grow with a younger rider, while also keeping them in check when there's more scrutiny—and rightfully so—on the EV dirt bike community. This, more than most, is a perfect introduction to motorcycling for your kid.
