Connecticut Decides E-Bikes Aren't Toys, Mandates Helmets for Everyone

If you’ve spent any time near a bike lane recently, you know why Connecticut is dropping the hammer. Starting October 1, the state is mandating helmets for every single e-bike rider, no matter their age. This isn't just about safety vests and good vibes; it's a direct response to the surge of kids on souped-up bikes—the kind with more watts than sense—treating suburban streets like their personal Grand Prix.

The state’s new rulebook draws a hard line at 750 watts and sets up the familiar tiered system, with Class 1 being your standard pedal-assist up to 20 mph, Class 2 adding a throttle to that same speed, and Class 3 letting you pedal-assist your way to 28 mph (if you’re over 16, that is). 

Simple enough.

But the real force of this law isn't in the helmet tickets; it's what happens when you get greedy with the settings.

Juice your motor or hack the governor to fly past those limits, and—poof—your e-bike is legally a motor-driven cycle. We're talking the whole nine yards: registration, a license, and the kind of fines for repeat offenses (up to $300) that’ll make that $90 helmet ticket look like a rounding error. Forget the "it's just a bicycle" excuse.

Even retailers are being put on notice. They now face penalties for selling a mislabeled or unclassified bike, a clear shot across the bow to the companies flooding the market with questionable hardware.

Look, nobody loves more rules. But the arms race in the bike lane was getting ridiculous. What started as a tool for commuters had morphed into a weird, unregulated middle ground between a bicycle and a dirt bike. This is Connecticut putting its foot down.

It might not be perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than waiting for the first major lawsuit to decide the rules for us.
