This New Motorcycle Jacket Will Make Your 'Akira' Dreams Come True
What's a little moto cosplay without the proper jacket?
The Italian motorcycle gear specialists at Spidi have offered some great options for a long time. I've owned more than a few pieces they've made (and I've bought them with my own money, before you ask), and I've loved them for their combination of style, fit, protectiveness, and overall quality.
But it's rare that I've had such an immediate reaction to a piece as I did with the new Pit Lane jacket. And then it hit me, possibly a little later than it should've given certain bikes I've written about recently. Chalk it up to not having drunk enough coffee this morning if you like; I can't say for sure.
Friends, I think the Pit Lane jacket is your easy, stylish way into an instant Kaneda vibe, whether you're rolling on a Kaneda tribute bike from Akira or not.
It's not a perfect replica, no; but if it's vibes you're after, then vibes you shall receive.
Now, if you've been looking at this jacket and wondering if it's really and truly a piece of motorcycle PPE, I have good news for you. While it's most definitely got a strong streetwear-influenced design in terms of its lines, it is, in fact, a true piece of Class A motorcycle protective gear, built to European Union standards.
Right off the rack, it comes with Level 2 armor in both the shoulders and the elbows, and has pockets inside for both Spidi's Warrior Chest Armor and Warrior Back Protector. Obviously, we can't guarantee this armor will do anything against espers, but it should at least offer some reasonable protection in the event of a motorcycle get-off.
If you don't like the red, fear not: It comes in two other colors (Black and Blue) as well. If you're the type of person who likes drawing attention to yourself with your clothing, but you also like looking more casual than a lot of motorcycle gear might allow, this could be the jacket for you.
Both sizing and pricing are pretty reasonable, as well. Spidi is selling this as a unisex jacket, though of course your mileage will vary with how well 'unisex' fits you, particularly if you're a woman. Still, Spidi says it offers this jacket in sizes from S to 3XL, in a "relaxed fit with slightly extended lengths." It has both ventilation and a moisture-dispersing mesh inside, with a shell made of WindOut Ripstop technical fabric. Pricing will vary by region, but in North America, the MSRP is $220.
But what do you think about this jacket? Take a look and let us know what you think in the comments.
