Kawasaki Recalls Z125 PRO Models For Faulty ECU Programming

Bad electronic control unit programming leads to the recall of almost 10,000 of Kawasaki's cutest scoot.

Remember back in 2016 when Kawasaki recalled the Z125 PRO for an issue with the rear shocks? Well, it looks like the tiny Z125 is being recalled again, this time for problems with the ECU programming.

According to Motorcyclist.com, Kawasaki has begun the arduous and costly process of a product recall for 2017-2018 Z125 PRO & PRO KRT Edition motorcycles (models BR125JHF and BR125JJF). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (or NHTSA) has just reported that the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) on certain Z125 PRO bikes may possess an “improper setting for the fuel injection” (ignition timing) which can result in the engine stalling. Kawasaki says the issue occurs when coming to a complete stop or accelerating from a standstill. The potential number of machines affected is 9,914, that means literally every unit of the pint-sized scoot that Kawasaki has churned out thus far.

Like all major recalls, the manufacturer will notify owners who are advised to bring the effected models into a local dealership where the ECU will be replaced free of charge. As of right now, Kawasaki has yet to provide a notification schedule. Concerned owners can contact Kawasaki customer service at 1-866-802-9381, as well as the NHTSA which can be reached at 1-888-327-4236 or safercar.gov.
