Many a rider has set out to cross the US on their motorbike, but comparatively few have attempted a Cannonball. At this point, there are a few for us two-wheel enthusiasts; there's the Motorcycle Cannonball, there's the Scooter Cannonball, and of course, there's the ADV Cannonball.

What's the ADV Cannonball, you ask? It's a nine-day trek across the continental United States, and the 2027 run will go from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon in that time. Some quick stats for you to turn over in your mind: Riders will cross 11 states, ride around 4,000 miles (that's just the paved part; optional ADV opportunities may change the total number of miles traveled along each participant's route), and have zero support along the way.

That's right; no follow vans (either provided by the event, or that you get friends or family to provide on your own). You know the Malle Moto category at Dakar? The concept is kind of like that, only for cross-US moto travel. If anything goes wrong along the way, it's up to you to fix your own bike roadside.

The 2027 ADV Cannonball will run from June 8 through 16, 2027, with official checkin for the event starting the day before, on June 7. Riders will show up and check-in over the course of June 7, with a planned start bright and early on the morning of June 8. Ride days will mostly be long and grueling, regardless of mileage covered; most are estimated to last at least nine hours in the saddle, with some extending to as many as 14 hours in a single day. Elevation changes will see riders gain as much as 28,000 feet in a single day (Day 5, on the ride from Custer, South Dakota to Bozeman, Montana).

Registration for the 2027 ADV Cannonball Rally is now open, and you can read details and sign up on the official website. There are two classes available: Pro Class and Mile Crusher Class. The Pro Class will cost US $1,199 to sign up, while the Mile Crusher Class will cost $1,099. Just 59 entry spots per class are available, and there are no refunds, transfers, or cancellations. Keep in mind, this entry fee does not include any lodgings along the way, which you will have to book for yourself.

What do you think?

To view a detailed full schedule, including official Rally hotels along the way with negotiated rates, that's also on the website. There's also more information here about the differences in length between the paved and ADV routes on days they're available. Also, be aware that on June 9, there is a temporary rally regulation in place where checkpoints can only be collected either all on the US side of the border, or all in Canada; you can't go back and forth between the two countries for your checkpoints, even if you just like using your passport and doing border crossings for fun. The daily finish line checkpoint is the only exception here.

If you want to see what it's like to do the ADV Cannonball, the video up at the top of this piece is a full-length documentary that Robert Baldinger made during the last rally. Even if you're not planning on doing it yourself in 2027, you still might want to add this one to your queue!
