GoPro's Smart Motorcycle Helmet Is Finally On Its Way, With a Big Name Onboard
In 2024, the American action camera maker acquired Aussie helmet startup Forcite. But it wouldn't stop there.
It's been a minute since we heard new information about GoPro's smart helmet plans. But there's some news on that front, building on the solid structure the action camera maker acquired when it bought Australian smart helmet maker Forcite back in 2024.
Speaking as someone who spent time doing hands-on (and on-head) testing of the Forcite MK1S smart helmet well before the GoPro deal went through, as well as someone who's recorded plenty of hours of ride footage with action cams, I was intrigued. I mean, Forcite's original design recorded footage meant more for dashcam-like purposes. It used a Sony-provided sensor that was fine for that purpose, even if it wouldn't blow anyone's socks off with its spectacular display of cinematic qualities.
Tweaking the design to integrate more of a dedicated action camera, with all the requisite hi-res video capture that would require, makes a lot of sense. Many riders already mount action cams on our chinbars, so it's the next most logical step, right?
But that was a long time ago and things have changed for GoPro. In remarks on the company's 2025 Q1 earnings call, GoPro CEO Nicholas Woodman announced that the action camera maker has officially partnered with well-respected motorcycle helmet manufacturer AGV to jointly develop its new "tech-enabled motorcycle helmets."
Woodman added, "This partnership between GoPro and AGV represents the exciting potential of two powerhouse brands coming together to bring meaningful innovation, improved safety and performance to the world of motorcycling, leveraging each other's design, engineering, and brand strengths. We look forward to sharing updates as we move closer towards launching our first product together."
