We didn’t plan on covering the 2011 KTM 990 SMT. Who cares about the addition of ABS? But what can we say? We’re suckers for a stair wheelie.

The bike shown in these action shots is identical to the previous model in all but the addition of the ABS brakes. The 114bhp, 72lb/ft, 999cc v-twin is retained, as are the half fairing and the detachable soft panniers. The idea here is to create a practical motorcycle that rides like a supermoto. Don’t get too terribly excited thinking this is an orange alternative to a Ducati Multistrada 1200 though, reports from Europe, where KTM is actually a real business capable of putting test machines in the hands of the press, indicate that the tank range struggles to reach 150 miles.

KTM’s pretty proud of its new ABS system, claiming it accounts for only 1kg of the KTM 990 SMT’s 197kg weight. As you’d expect from a company that primarily makes dirt bikes, the ABS is defeatable with the flick of a switch.
