Yamaha Saluto
The Saluto was a remarkably popular option in India’s entry level commuter segment. Sporting a 125cc engine, the Yamaha Saluto was a fuel efficient, lightweight commuter bike. However, the Saluto failed to sustain its potential in the small motorcycle segment, being overtaken by its rivals with better technology and continuous innovation. As such, it has been axed in the midst of the BS6 transition. It’s bigger brother, the Saluto RX, has also been killed off.
Yamaha FZ 25
The Yamaha FZ 25 was popular in India as Yamaha’s mid sized naked option. It definitely looked the part with aggressive lines and good riding ergonomics, and features several high tech options for its category such as a full digital instrument panel and LED lights. Despite its success and popularity, as things stand, it’s goodbye to the Yamaha FZ 25.
Royal Enfield Classic 500
This came as a surprise to me, as I had always been under the impression that the Royal Enfield Classic 500 was a bestselling model in India. Apparently, that title belongs to the Classic 350, as such, its 500cc sibling is on the receiving end of the axe amid the BS6 transition. It’s also important to note that the entire 500cc range of Royal Enfield will no longer continue production. The responsibility of carrying on the Royal Enfield namesake will be left to the now popular 650 twins, as well as a few surprises the brand may have for us in the near future.
Honda CBR250R
One of the more iconic sportbikes in the Indian market, it comes as a surprise that the Honda CBR250R has been killed off amid the BS6 transition. Unlike its other competitors, the Honda CBR250R proved to be an excellent all rounder, despite bearing sportbike characteristics. Unfortunately, the CBR250R will no longer be available for purchase brand new, so those of you who are eyeing this bike will need to resort to buying them used.
Yamaha R3
The Yamaha R3 is gone in India? How can this extremely popular sportbike be killed off? First of all, the R3 was an import to India, rather than it being assembled locally. As such, it had a rather steep price tag starting at INR 3,49,850. Not to worry though, as the Yamaha R3 will be back later this year featuring a BS6 compliant engine and updated styling. However, for now, Indians will have to say goodbye to this well loved sport bike whilst waiting for the new bike to arrive.
