So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu...
Well, fall's finally here. It's getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, everything is pumpkin spice flavor, and my time with FleetBob is drawing to a close. In fact, I have to return our trusty 2018 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob 114 at the end of this week. I'll tell you what, friends, I don't know if I'm ready.
FleetBob and I have had some pretty good times this summer. We crossed Lake Michigan on a ferryboat and rode the length and breadth of the Wolverine State. We waked a famous Detroit bartender together with friends, traveled into the hinterlands of Ohio, ran errands, attended bike shows and concerts, produced some content for you dear readers, and generally had a rockin' good time. There were laughs, there were tears, there was a copious amount of swears, and the journey was the friends we made along the way.
Like all good things, though, my partnership with FleetBob has come to an end. Actually, it came to an end last month but I finagled an extra month together because I wanted to ride it in Detroit's Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride. Unfortunately, due to a number of extremely rad work-related things, I can't do DGR this year and FleetBob has to go home. My rough plan is to ride M12 (also known as Michigan Avenue or Chicago Road) all the way to the Windy City on Friday where I'll spend the evening with some musician friends. Along the way, I'll shoot a bunch of pictures, stop at some roadside attractions (shout out to Stagecoach Stop in the Irish Hills), eat at some diners, and generally take my time saying goodbye to FleetBob. I'll get up Saturday, ride the rest of the way to Milwaukee, drop the bike off at HQ, then take the train all the way back home. It'll be fun, but bittersweet.
That said, I still have FleetBob for the next couple days. What to do between now and then, though? What kind of Detroit-area shenanigans should FleetBob and I get into before Friday Morning? Race some shady-looking dudes on 'Busas and Gixxers with neon and extended swingarms for pink slips? Bracket racing at Milan Dragway? Ride a wheelie all the way to Ann Arbor? Chase birds at Belle Isle or bizjets at City Airport? I have some time, I could fit something ridiculous in. What do you guys think?
