Oh hey, it’s all the 2011 KTMs, leaked a few days ahead of their official debut at EICMA. There’s only one significant new model, the KTM 350 EXC-F Factory, which is basically a motocross racer with lights that they’ll be dominating enduro with next year, but there’s new colors and minor tweaks for bikes like the 2011 KTM RC8 R too. Like most such things you read on Hell For Leather, we’re the only ones with this.
2011 KTM 350 EXC-F Factory
KTM won a lot of motocross races in 2010 with the 350 SX-F and it’s looking to translate that success to enduro racing in 2011. The EXC-F uses the exact same fuel-injected, DOHC, 349.7cc single-cylinder engine, which KTM claims is as powerful as a 450 and as light and compact as a 250. This will be a factory race bike and won’t yet be available in serial production so there aren’t full tech specs, but we’d guess the SX-F’s 103.8kg/229lbs (dry) weight, plus a kilo or two, would be a good starting point.
2011 KTM 125 Duke
We’ve already showed you this model in detail as it was released at the Intermot show a couple of weeks back. Presumably built by KTM’s Indian partner Bajaj to keep costs down, the 125 Duke looks ridiculously high-spec for a European learner-legal 125. Power from the four-stroke engine is 15bhp while the whole thing weighs just 125kg/276lbs (wet, full tank).
This is the other big news for EICMA. A new crankshaft, refined fuel injection and new dual-plug ignition increases power from 168 to 175bhp and torque is up 1.5lb/ft to 93.6. That crank, the injection refinements and a new, heavier flywheel should address the main complaint people have of the RC8: an aggressive surge of power as it comes on-cam. When you’re fully leant over and that happens it can upset things. It’s not a huge deal, but people do bitch about it; hopefully no longer. KTM claims these changes also marginally improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions.
On the handling side, KTM claims its thoroughly revised the suspension giving it a wider range of adjustment than before. These changes include a new eccentric linkage for the rear shock.
Then there’s the looks. KTM clearly employs the best graphic designer currently working for any OEM. Loud, but classy, the two-color paint schemes perfectly accent the RC8’s sharp, geometric lines. Color us impressed. Oh and there’s a new LED running light.
Only plan to use your RC8 R on the track? KTM will sell you a version with race fairings and a race exhaust. They call it the KTM RC8 R Track.
2011 KTM 990 SMT ABS
Like the 125 Duke, this model was released at Intermot and we’ve already covered it. It’s the 990 SMT practical supermoto thing, now with anti-lock brakes.
2011 KTM 990 Adventure Dakar
We showed you a sneak peak at this special edition the other day, but didn’t know any mechanical details. In addition to the blue and orange paint, suede seat and standard engine bars, the Dakar combines the 115bhp engine from the KTM 990 Adventure R with the rest of the parts coming from the regular KTM 990 Adventure, including ABS brakes. Expect pricing similar to that of the non-R, which will make this a pretty good deal.
