Learn more about Plutonium Clothing, which is a company that specializes in making fashionable motorcycle jackets for women.

Ah, women's motorcycle gear. We can get into a bitch fest for hours about how men have better gear and a better selection. Here's the thing though—there are more and more women hopping on two-wheels. It's only a matter of time before there are those out there who will hear our cries, and create something that can suit lady riders who want gear that is both fashionable and functional.

Ride in Fashion

Fortunately, someone did realize the lack of fashion in women's moto gear. Plutonium Clothing was created by Marilyn Yu, a clothing designer based in San Francisco, CA. Formerly specializing in wedding dresses, she's now transitioned to creating stylish, high performance motorcycle jackets for women.

As an avid motorcyclist herself, Marilyn isn't a fan of the gear. On the Plutonium website, She states that the gear made for women is made of "mediocre quality and unflattering." She took matters into her own hands and decided to make fashionable and functional women's moto jackets.

Currently on the market, REV'IT gear or any other brands names (Dainese, Alpinestars, Icon, etc.) make women's gear that look similar to men's, but the main difference is the fit, which is tailored specifically for women (obviously). I've noticed that a lot of women's gear has swirly/girly designs and the color pink is dominant. I feel there's no need to do any of those things to make it scream, "this is for women!"

Stylish, but Safe Too?

As you can see from the pictures, Marilyn's jackets are trés chic—more so than what's out there on the market. You're probably thinking, "Sure a Plutonium Clothing jacket is super cute, but is it going to protect me in case I go down?" This is a totally a fair question...

I must admit, I was skeptical about this jacket at first. First off, I didn't see anything really wrong with my REV'IT jacket. It fits (for the most part) and looks somewhat clean. Why would I need a new one, especially something that's a bit more "flashy."

However, a Plutonium jacket looks so impeccable—you can really see the intricate details that went into each jacket. They are so detailed, you would think they are all hand made... and you would be correct! According to Marilyn, all orders submitted are made to order.

There are three jackets: Emma, Elizabeth, and Victoria. Remember that question you asked yourself about the jackets' durability? It seems they are made with good quality materials: all jackets are made with 1000 Denier textured CORDURA® Nylon with water-repellent finish on the outershell. If you don't know what CORDURA® is, it's a highly abrasion-resistant nylon fabric weave and it has a polyurethane coating that makes a durable water repellent finish.

Each jacket also comes with a matching wind/waterproof layer that can be worn with the jacket or separately. Finally, all armor comes in a separate layer that can be removed and worn with a different jacket.

It's All in the Details

When it comes to the three jackets, each one has their own unique fashionable features:

The Emma has a cowl collar and is designed with stripes. It's also fully lined with four pockets and an adjustable belt. Lastly, the Emma has SOLAS reflective tape on the sleeves and back.

Elizabeth

This jacket was inspired by Queen Elizabeth I, and as you can see, it has exquisite details and frills. This jacket is fully lined and has three pockets and a fully adjustable belt.

Victoria

The Victoria has dramatic lapels, puffed sleeves, and a bustle. It's also the longest of the three jackets and it comes with five pockets and an adjustable belt.

Trying Them On

I had the privilege to try on the jackets, and as you can clearly see, I went from frump...

I could use a bit of color and frills...

...to fab-u-lous!

I felt simply fab in the Victoria. Also worth noting is that I'm wearing the Victoria with armor underneath.
