We always try to emphasize the importance of wearing the proper gear every time you throw your leg over the saddle. That being said, a one-piece suit may not always be the best thing for a quick run to the supermarket. Jeans are a practical option for riding bikes, but a regular pair of 'ole Levi's won't cut it no matter what your dad says. Instead, here is a short list of better, safer options for riding jeans that'll keep your skin and wallet intact.

I'm sure many would agree that $150 would be a fair price cap considering the level of protection these jeans provide compared to your average jeans—most of us would be hard pressed to pay more than that for a pair of jeans. Here are a few that offer the most bang-for-buck while still looking great for everyday use.

Speed and Strength Rust and Redemption/Killer Queen Jeans - $134.99

The Speed and Strength Rust and Redemption jeans look like something you might see from the fashionable uglyBros line, except these are about half the price. The 12 oz denim jeans feature a classic Euro style fit, stretch panels at the thighs and rear, Kevlar reinforcements and knee armor. Speed and Strength offers a similarly feature packed jean for women—the Killer Queen jeans.

The Downsides

  • Tapered legs may favor skinnier riders
  • Complex stitching design may seem too busy if you are looking for something more discreet.

Dainese Montana 4D - $149.95

The first thing you want to understand about these Montana Jeans is the “4D” label. The 4 means these are a stylish, slim fit while the “D” is in reference to the denim material. You’ll see these labels on numerous Dainese pants. The denim is interwoven with Kevlar fibers combined with pockets to support the Dainese Proshape Knee Armor (sold separately).

The Downsides

  • Relatively thin denim
  • There may not be enough features to justify the added cost versus other options out there
  • Knee armor not included

AGV Sport Alloy - $116

If you're looking for something other than indigo denim, your best bet is the AGV Sport Alloy jeans. The straight cut, 12oz stone washed denim has all the features of the bigger brands such as Kevlar layering and included knee armor pockets. Also, an anti-bacterial polyester mesh lining.

The Downsides

  • Oddly positioned knee armor pockets may cause coverage issues for some
  • Sizes run small. It’s recommended to order one size up.
  • Button fly (although, this may be a plus for some)

Following the 501 relaxed fitting, these are the jeans most likely to blend in on casual friday or at the bar, and are arguably the most feature packed on this list. These 14oz denim jeans feature a full length Kevlar layer from the cuff up and pockets for armor around the hips and knees.

The Downsides

  • Oddly positioned knee armor pockets may cause coverage issues for some

Honorable Mention: Drayko Women’s Drift Riding Jeans - $140

Normally around $180, you can occasionally find these on sale for right under $150. The Drift jeans might be the go-to Women’s riding jean featuring reinforced seams, matching stitching and wide belt loops. These relaxed fit jeans are also CE approved with a low waist but there’s enough in the rear to provide good coverage.

The Downsides

  • Currently on sale, regular price is around $180
  • Many might opt for the better designed Dianese D19 K or California 4K at this price range.

What are your favorite riding jeans under or even slightly above $150?
