Welcome to the new BMW S1000XR, which combines a 160bhp engine lifted from the S1000R but puts it in an adventure bike. The new BMW is targeted at the Ducati Multistrada and the Aprilia Caponord for street supremacy in the ADV styled market.

The XR will be fitted with ABS, traction control as standard, and riding modes. In typical BMW fashion everything else is an option. Owners will have to pay extra for the use all of the electronic rider aids.

The S1000XR is fitted with an LCD dash that can display a lot of potential information. Riders can get info on revs, speed, gear position, riding mode selected, mileage, two trip meters, fuel level, range, average consumption and speed. There is also a lap timer, shift light (with adjustable brightness) and a clock. As if that weren't enough, there is also 12v socket for charging accessories.

The base package has Rain and Road riding modes and a standard version of the Automatic Stability Control (ASC). Tick the dollar sign box for the Pro settings and owners will be able to add two additional riding modes, along with ABS Pro. This one really makes us wonder. ABS Pro gives the bike ABS functionality while its leaning through turns, basically the same system KTM and Ducati supply as standard! The package will also add Dynamic Traction Control, which includes a lean angle sensor to detect and manage wheel spin while accelerating out of corners.

The engine is basically the same found in the S1000R roadster, a detuned S1000RR motor putting out 160bhp and delivering a healthy 83lbft of peak torque. An optional Quickshifter Pro is also available. Interestingly, it allows both up and down shifting without the clutch.

The XR model gets an all-new frame and swingarm. The subframe is said to be stronger than those of S1000R and RR, so it can carry both luggage and passenger more easily.

BMW’s asymmetric headlights are present, as well as the shark gill side panels. The adventure beak is ever present and the bike is fitted with a steering damper.

BMW are promising the S1000XR is going to be a bike for all occasions, and as long as those occasions are all paved we won’t argue. Despite the long-travel suspension and adventure styling the 17 inch wheels front and rear preclude any major shenanigans. If we recall correctly BMW makes another bike better suited to that kind of riding. It is designed to carry a passenger and luggage, including a top box so it will get the job done and done comfortably.
