Seven million of the total 27 million riders in the U.S. are women—that’s 30 percent. It's hard to find motorcycle gear tailored specifically to women, let alone a bag (most are at minimum unisex and/or bulky), but someone finally took notice of this growing segment by creating gear tailored specifically to women.

Look At What She's Done

Debra Chin of Los Altos, CA created MotoChic Gear, and with it came the Lauren bag. The name of the bag was inspired by motorcyclist and style icon Lauren Hutton, and it’s quite a fitting name—this is definitely one stylish bag.

The best part (a key feature) other than the look is that the bag is versatile: It can be converted into a backpack or a tote. The backpack has its own straps that can be tucked away out of sight and has a storable, adjustable waist and chest strap to make sure the bag stays on snug when out riding. Other moto specific features include large reflective panels for night time visibility, built in rain cover with reflective logo, and the tabs cinch at the sides for aerodynamics. The engineering and fine details are praise worthy and only make this bag much more desirable.

Cool Additional Features

Another nifty feature is the material used to construct the bag—it's made mostly of durable, lightweight polyester. It also has a soft lined protective pocket that fits up to a 13” laptop, 2L hydration pack, or a back protector. There's a spacious interior that features a main compartment with three open pockets and a full length zippered pocket.

The Lauren also has a sidekick, the Valerie, which is named after Valerie Thompson who is a seven-time motorcycle land-speed record holder. The Valerie is a small clutch/wallet, and it includes six card slots as well as an interior zip pocket with a fab tassel zipper pull.

Don’t just take my word that this is a must-have bag for women two-wheeled riders. Debra recently launched a Kickstarter and hit her goal of $30,000 for to fund the production of the bag. Afterwards, she provided the following stats on the Lauren’s success:

  • Only 38 percent of all Kickstarter campaign have successfully funded
  • Of the successfully funded campaigns, only 12 percent have raised between $20K and $99.9K

(Note: These statistics were provided immediately after the end of the Kickstarter, back at the end December 2014.)

Now that’s pretty impressive! The Lauren bag is currently on pre-order and will be available in late spring/early summer. To pre-order, head to www.motochicgear.com

Note: That’s me rocking out the Lauren. I met Debra by responding for her post looking for a female rider for a video. After two days of filming, I fell in love with the bag. I can't wait to have the final product. (Source: Trisha Leeper Photography)
