BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha all named as key players in the global off-road market over next half-decade.
If a London-based market research company is correct, it’s gonna be smooth sailing for the ADV and MX industry over the next five years
TechNavio is a market research analysis company that files industry analysis size and trends reports on everything from the commercial vehicle axle market to the top factors driving the global camel meat market (literally both reports that the company released in the last 48 hours). Recently the London-based research outfit released a report titled Global Off-road Motorcycles Market 2018-2022. TechNavio’s analysis forecasts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.81 percent in the global off-road motorcycles market during the coming five year period.
MORE INDUSTRY GROWTH: Polaris reports solid numbers for 2017
Divided into three segments—the Americas, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA)—the report studied data from multiple independent sources (including input from experts and key participants from the industry) to accurately calculate market size, trends, and future growth. The 117-page report goes over the market landscape, its growth prospects over the coming years, and includes a discussion and SWOT analysis of the key vendors operating in this market including BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha.
NOT JUST ADV BIKES: BMW reports record motorcycle sales growth
According to the report some of the major factors influencing future ADV and MX sales figures and growth are the increasing popularity of adventure sports which is listed as a market driver, while “adverse effects on soil structure and wildlife owing to growing off-roading events” is put down as a market challenge. TechNavio’s analysis pointed out an increased number of dual-sport bikes on the market which now includes an array of solid entry-level offerings, giving more and more people the opportunity to get into two-wheeling, and hooking them from an early stage.
Interestingly Ducati was not listed as one of the key players in the off-road market
The report’s findings state that the competition between the top competing OEMs has lead to an increasing amount of models in quite a few segments, including the dual-sport class, though the global motorcycle industry continues to be dominated by commuting motorcycles. The global motorcycle manufacturing industry has been experiencing increased sales volume in the three primary market regions, a trend that can be seen via the year-to-year growth rate of motorcycle sales volumes over various segments. This does seem to contradict many of the reports I’ve read that state the opposite, however a handful of marques have been faring pretty well in recent years.
MORE INDUSTRY STUDIES: Report forecasts strong growth in electric market
Interestingly the report doesn’t appear to include scramblers, though it does seemingly take into consideration both dual-sports/ADV bikes, and MXers. “One trend in the market is emergence of dual-sport motorcycles. The intensifying competition in the global motorcycle industry is leading to increased launches of new models across segments. Numerous sub-segments within the motorcycle industry have emerged over the past few years. Such segments are rapidly gaining popularity among riders as they boast of combined benefits of two categories of motorcycles,” said an analyst from the research team.
